43. The "What Are We?" Conversation
Three months of dates, sleepovers, and a toothbrush that migrated to their bathroom. No label — partner, girlfriend, boyfriend, anything — has ever been spoken, and the ambiguity has started to itch. Constraints
- Own it as YOUR want. No 'people are asking,' no 'I guess we should probably maybe.'
- Declare your own position before requesting theirs.
- Their honest uncertainty is an acceptable return value. Punishing honesty teaches lying.
- Timing: not mid-fight, not post-intimacy, not at their birthday dinner. Neutral ground, unhurried moment.
Hints
- 'I'd rather be clear than cool' is a cheat code — it names the awkwardness and spends it as confidence.
- Going first with your own status ('I'm not seeing anyone else and I don't want to') pays the vulnerability cost upfront, making their honest answer cheaper.
- If they need time, a soft checkpoint ('think on it — I'm not in a rush, I just didn't want to keep guessing') beats extracting an answer on the spot.
